35mm Grit and Grain
A few B&W film options for shooting the streets of Tokyo (or your town). 📷
I look forward to shooting film in Tokyo almost every day. I’ll grab whatever roll is on my desk and put it in one of my cameras, head out and see what I can find in my viewfinder.
I prefer days when there’s plenty of light and the contrasts will be optimal, and Winter in Tokyo means the skies will be clear, often.
Every roll of film has its own unique properties. My favorite is the Ilford XP2 Super 400 ⬆ because I love the fine grain and the kind of contrasts it delivers.
It’s also interesting to shoot with color film and develop it with B&W chemicals. ⬆ The Fujicolor 100 is cheap in more ways than one and creates a flat look that “looks old”, as I’ve been told.
The AGFA APX 400 has a lot more grain and if you’re a photographer looking for a lot more texture in your images, check out this film stock. ⬆
I think another favorite film at the moment is the Kentmere Pan 400. It has a finer grain and the contrasts aren’t too intense. Also, it’s not as expensive as some of the other films I like to shoot with. ⬆
What does all this boil down to? It means that experimentation is one reason why I shoot black & white film.
Psssst. Here’s a cool nugget of info you might like. The Ilford XP2 Super can be developed where you get your color film developed (C-41 process). Boom! I suggest buying this film from an online retailer other than Amazon. Freestyle Photographic Supplies has a great selection of other goods to choose from, too. If you’re new to B&W photography, I suggest buying that Ilford XP2 Super 400 as a starting point. 📷 🏆
